You have the power to change, you have the power to heal.
Therapy isn't always organized in a structured way. Although together we will work out goals and set a treatment plan for how we may reach these goals each session may vary with the impact of your daily life. Crisis events may lead the session in a direction not preplanned, or the natural flow of where the session goes may be something unexpected. Typically I use a blend of modalities and experience in psychotherapy. These include psychodynamic therapy, narrative therapy, attachment based principles, psychoeducation and cognitive reconstructuring.
All of the psychotherapy that I have done has lead me to the learning that the brain knows how to heal, that each session may be very different but the theme of these sessions will always take advantage of my training, and skills with what your needs are to reach positive outcomes with both in mind. Through your active role in change and my support and empathy healing is always possible.
I have a background of my own personal healing, exploration through the Law of Attraction, CBT, mindfulness, trauma therapy and more that have impacted my private practice in positive ways. Below I will describe just a number of the modalities I use in sessions with clients.
CBT is a form of psychodynamic therapy to effectively change the maladaptive cognitions that are behind our negative cycles of behaviour.
CBT helps to build self awareness around how our cognitive distortions effect how we feel and together how these thoughts and feelings can result in how we behave or our negative patterns and cycles.
By learning the unhelpful ways our cognitions can effect our problematic emotions and unhelpful learned patterns of behaviour we can also learn new coping strategies and ways to shift our cognitions for positive change.
CBT has been around for a long time, there are many many research articles and books to evaluate and prove the method is successful for issues ranging from anxiety and depression to addiction.
I have been trained in CBT and been using this method in various settings for over 15 years. Including hospitals, community agencies, school systems and private organizations.
Much of CBT is done through workbooks and work sheets but it can also be effective through talk therapy. You will often be given some light homework to look at and participate in throughout the time between sessions.
DBT was developed by the psychologist Marsha Linehan, PhD in the 1970s. It is a branch from CBT but much more structured.
DBT is a practice of mindfulness with structured skill sets that the client can learn for effective cognitive restructuring and emotional regulation.
It is often considered the go to form of therapy for those struggling with suicidal ideation, substance use, and borderline personality disorder (BPD).
DBT is evidence based with years of research and science to show it is effective in supporting people through healing.
DBT in private therapy differs from group therapy sessions of the typical DBT in that we do not necessarily follow a structured plan of learning through mindfulness skillset into the work book and skill sets. Because we follow the clients lead it will vary session to session, and in between each session the skillset that we may have learned will be the focus for you. Some sessions may focus more on a different form of therapy or crisis management or even simply case management with regards to what is occurring in your life and environment.
TIR is a evidence based model of therapy to focus on healing from the impact trauma has had in our lives. Developed in 1984 it has been useful in relief from emotional pain, stronger self esteem, relationship support and personal growth. Like other evidence based therapi TIR is considered an exposure technique in that the client will take a deeper look at the impact and event of trauma in order to process and heal.
TIR is considered fairly new in the therapeutic world of research practices to heal from trauma. However in 2012 it was entered into the National Registry of Evidence Based Programs and Practices. You can read more about it here.
Brainspotting is one of the newest modalities I use, but also one of the most powerfully effective! Discovered in 2003 by David Grand PhD it is quickly becoming a go to modality for therapists around the world. Brainspotting locates points in the client’s visual field that help to access unprocessed trauma in the subcortical brain. Where you look effects how you feel.
Brainspotting is used not only on trauma, anxiety and grief but is ideal for addictions, suicidal ideation, relationship discord, as well as expansion in athletic abilities, mindfulness, career paths and purpose. You can heal negative cycles and learned patterns but also expand on the positive aspects you are seeking. You can read more about brainspotting here.
I am a certified brainspotting practitioner with training in Phase 1 and 2 of brainspotting as well as Expansion and Addictions. I have been practicing brainspotting since September 2022 with amazing results for my clients.
Brainspotting has been shown to be more effective than EMDR in some research studies. It has been increasing in research and case studies since its discovery and powerful healing of psychological distress. You can take a look at some of the research here.
